What it is
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It mimics a hormone your body already produces (glucagon-like peptide-1) that signals fullness, slows stomach emptying, and helps regulate blood sugar.
How it's taken
A once-weekly subcutaneous injection, typically in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Your provider will start you at a low dose and titrate up over several weeks to minimize side effects.
Common side effects
- Nausea (most common in the first weeks)
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Mild fatigue or headache
- Injection-site reactions
Serious but rare risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumors. Your provider will review your medical history before prescribing.
Compounded vs. branded. Wegovy® and Ozempic® are FDA-approved branded versions of semaglutide. Compounded semaglutide is made by a licensed pharmacy and is not FDA-approved. Your provider will discuss which option fits your situation.
