What it is

Tirzepatide is a dual receptor agonist — it acts on both GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 receptors. In clinical trials it has shown the largest average weight reduction of any approved weight-management medication to date.

How it's taken

A once-weekly subcutaneous injection. Like semaglutide, your provider will start low and titrate the dose over weeks to manage side effects.

Common side effects

Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, especially during dose increases
Constipation or abdominal discomfort
Decreased appetite (often a desired effect)
Injection-site reactions

Serious but rare risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumors.
